European Union and Singapore: FTA between European Union and Singapore initialed

October 3, 2013

On 20 September 2013, the EU and Singapore initialed a free trade agreement (FTA).

Negotiations between the EU and Singapore on the FTA started in March 2010 and were concluded in December 2012.

The agreement with Singapore is the first of a number of agreements the EU is currently negotiating with countries in Southeast Asia.

Negotiations with Malaysia and Vietnam are already under way, whereas preparatory talks continue with other ASEAN nations.

The EU considers the FTAs with individual ASEAN countries as stepping stones toward a region-to-region agreement, which remains the long-term objective.
